Not often does a softball team lose by 10, then turn around and beat that same team by 10.

And it’s not often an error in the broadcast booth before the game leaves it up to the fans to sing the “The Star-Spangled Banner” — in whatever key they wanted.

But Phoenix Horizon High was unfazed by the pregame performance and pulled off such a feat Saturday night to win the Desert Mountain Softball Classic, beating Basha 10-0.

Horizon previously lost to Basha 13-3 Thursday to begin the tournament but overcame tough teams like Red Mountain to get into the championship.

The run deficit happened throughout the game. Horizon took an early lead with two consecutive two-run innings.

Junior Haley Boyce led off with a single and scored on a double to right field by senior Margaret Stahm.

Midway through the game, the lead became more pronounced.

Sophomore Kaila Jacobi hit a double to drive in freshman Gabby Moreno and sophomore T. Statman in the top of the fourth.

Stahm kept the lead going with a home run to center at the top of the sixth to put Horizon up 8-0.

Statman, who pitched a complete game, was the leading factor in keeping Basha scoreless. She was able to keep Basha’s heavy hitters, such as junior Hailee Siroky, off the bases.

Basha junior Kelsey Tidwell also pitched a complete game. However, despite her efforts, Basha was unable to make any plays, and Basha never had more than one runner on base.
