2015 FAB 50 WEEK 2
FULLCOUNTSOFTBALL.COM
NATIONAL RANKINGS

By Mark Tennis – Editor, CalHiSports.com

It’s still that time of the year in the FAB 50 softball rankings in which there can be significant movement among top teams in the power states of California, Arizona, Florida and Texas while much of the rest of the nation’s top teams have yet to play.

Generally, the rule of thumb involving teams from cold weather states is that they just stay in the same position of the rankings until they do something. We also will not move up a team from the bubble into the FAB 50 at 0-0. A team needs to at least play once and win for that to happen.

Mission Viejo won in Arizona but needed a big come-back to do it.
Mission Viejo won in Arizona but needed a big come-back to do it.

No. 1 Mission Viejo won the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz., for the second straight season and will now look toward the Best of the West tournament back in Southern California for its next major test.

The Diablos did need to get a four-run rally in the bottom of fifth inning to beat Canyon of Anaheim 5-2 in the TOC semifinals. They won in the championship game 1-0 over surprise finalist Yucaipa as Taylor McQuillin (signed by Arizona) pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Yucaipa pitcher Brooke Bollinger (headed to Nevada) had a strong week as well.

Yucaipa’s wins in Arizona also helped that team become this week’s highest newcomer in the FAB 50 at No. 24. The Thunderbirds have never been nationally ranked before and that might be true of any team in school history.

Another newcomer this week is Maryville of Tennessee. The Rebels go in at 2-0 after a wild-and-crazy 14-12 win on Tuesday of this week over previous No. 35 Gibbs (Corryton, Tenn.). They are led by University of Tennessee commit Caylan Arnold, known mostly for her dominant pitching. In Tuesday’s game, however, Arnold was hit hard by the Eagles. The reason Arnold and her team still won is that the standout junior drove in eight runs as a batter.

Another game on Tuesday we were paying attention to took place in Southern California between Inland Empire heavyweights Santiago of Corona and Murrieta Valley. Santiago was trailing 7-5 entering the seventh inning, but scored three times for an 8-7 victory. Raquel Jaime drove home the tying and winning runs on a one-out single with the bases loaded. Santiago, which has avenged its only loss, moved up to No. 7 in this week’s FAB 50. Murrieta Valley, which was hoping to avenge its only loss, dropped to 6-2 but nonetheless still moved up one position in this week’s rankings.
